Reading Celebrations

I'm finally on February break and can catch up on blogging!  The past two weeks, I have been working on plans for our month long reading celebration in March.  My school will be celebrating Read Across America, Dr. Seuss's birthday, World Read Aloud Day, and our love of reading!

Last year, my old school did a week long "Dr. Seuss's Birthday Bash", which you can read about here and here.  It was so much fun and I knew I had to do something similar this year.  Everyone at my school is so enthusiastic about the idea, we started a reading celebration committee to plan a bunch of fun activities for students and staff.

Some of the fun will include:

  • guest readers
  • ***special library centers***
  • a book swap - hopefully it will be as successful as the Mrs. Crook's International Book Giving Day!)
  • a "Breakfast, Blankets, and Books" morning
  • a school-wide goal of reading 1,000,000 minutes in March.  My amazing art teacher has great ideas for helping me with a bulletin board to track our reading.  I can't wait to see how it comes out and share!
Some other fun ideas I've seen:
  • More Dr. Seuss ideas - Cari at The Centered School Library just posted a ton of really fun Dr. Seuss-themed activities for her book fair on her blog this week!
  • Skyping - I'm a little intimidated by the idea of Skyping in the library but Matthew Winner has an amazing-sounding skype project for WRAD on his Busy Librarian blog.  I don't think I'm quite ready for this right now but would love to try it out in the near future and definitely for next year's WRAD.

Are you doing anything fun to celebrate reading in your school?

***A few weeks ago, I had my Dr. Seuss-inspired Reading Celebration centers posted on TPT and received a take-down notice from Dr. Seuss Enterprises and the FYI from TPT that "Dr. Suess and all Suess-related materials are completely 'off-limits'. This includes utilizing the names or titles of any Dr. Suess works in your 'Product Title', and/or within the content of the product itself. This also includes any Suess-related artwork. Anything related to Dr. Suess is the exclusive property of Dr. Seuss Enterprises, L.P. Only they have the right to sell Suess products in any form (including supplementary content). Even offering 'free' Suess-related material is off-limits." (TPT misspelled Seuss a crazy number of times, not me!)

Two things:
1) I find this a little disappointing that I can't share free materials with other teachers. The teachers who buy and use Dr. Seuss's books to promote literacy and a love of reading in their schools.
2) I removed the product from TPT but I am happy to send you the PDF of center signs and activities as my library friend.  Email me at mrslodgeslibrary(at)gmail(dot)com and I'd be thrilled to share with you!

  1. Mrs. Lodge, Thanks for the mention. Are you sure you don't want to try connecting? Even with just one itsy bitsy class in central maryland and a teacher librarian who you know will make things awesome? I'm here to support if you want to connect to read aloud for 15 minutes on WRAD13. It will be super fun and super painless, I promise :)

  2. I am very disappointed in Seuss Enterprises. They have sucked much of the fun out of the celebration this year. I made your truffula trees for my reading center last year (I had a small forest). They were such a big hit! I was saving them for this year...but my grandkids wanted to take them home. I think they destroyed them. Now I am not sure I can legally make them again.

I would love a PDF of your center signs and activities. I wonder if I will get in trouble if I put my kiddos in blue wigs and thing 1-25 circles for our green eggs and ham breakfast? They were so cute last year, I may have to risk it.
